It was built in 1874 by Jayajirao Scindia, the Maharaja of Gwalior in the British Raj, the Tomb of Tansen The Memorial of Tansen, also known as the Tomb of Tansen, is located in the vicinity of Muhammad Ghaus Tomb. Tansen was the famous musician and one among the nine jewels of Akbar’s court. He is among the most influential personalities in North Indian tradition of Hindustani classical music. Tomb of Gaus Mohammad was built in 16th century AD during the Akbar’s rule. Ghaus Mohammed was an Afghan Prince who later converted into a Sufi saint. According to legend, Mohammad Ghaus assisted Babur when he was conquered the fort of Gwalior in 1526 CE. The Gujari Mahal Archeological Museum or State Archaeological Museum, sometimes called the “Gwalior Fort Museum”, is a state museum in Gwalior, located in the fortress of Gujari Mahal

Orchha established in 1531 by Rudra Pratap Singh , was once the capital town of a Rajput ruler whose name is unknown. Orchha is located on the banks of the Betwa River and lies 15 km away from Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh. Founded by Rudra Pratap Singh, a Bundela chief, in 1501 AD, Orchha’s prime attraction is the Orchha Fort which was built by Rudra Pratap. The fort has many connected buildings which were built during the rule of different ones. Two of the most well known of these are the Jahagir Mahal and Raj Mandir.

Khajuraho is a city of temples. The entire area has been enlisted under the UNESCO world heritage site. The Khajuraho Group of Monuments date from around 1000 AD, when the Chandella Dynasty ruled this area. Originally there were 85 temples, of which only 22 still exist. There are both Brahman and Jain temples at the site. The temples are beautifully decorated on the outside: bands of sculptures surround the walls. These depict life in the time of the Chandellas. Some of the sculptures are remarkable because of their erotic displaying. 

Western Group of Temples

Kandariya Mahadeo: dedicated to Lord Shiva, is the largest of Khajuraho temples, reaching to a height of 31 m. The sanctum sanctorum enshrines a lingam, a phallic symbol associated with vigor, fertility and potency. The main shrine of the temple is known for its exquisite representation of gods, goddesses, along with celestial maidens and lovers.


Chaunsat Yogini Temple: dedicated to goddess Kali, is the earliest surviving shrine of the western group. It is the only granite temple and depicts amative couples in sensuous postures.

Lakshamana Temple: is famous for the trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, along with goddess Lakshmi. What is truly remarkable here is the three-headed idol of Vishnu’s incarnations, Narasimha and Varaha in the finely carved sanctum sanctorum of the temple.

Chitragupta Temple: dedicated to Sun God, is famous for a three- headed image of Brahma, enshrined in this temple. A Nandi bull faces the shrine.


Matangeswara Temple: dedicated to Lord Shiva, is famous for its eight feet high lingam.Vishwanath Temple is noted for its impressive pathway with lions flaking the northern and elephants the southern steps. A three-headed image of Brahma is enshrined in VishwanathTemple.

Varaha Temple:  houses a nine-foot high boar-incarnation of Lord Vishnu.

Eastern Group of Temples

The Eastern Group of Temples of Khajuraho can be divided into two, the temples dedicated to the Jain pantheon and the temples dedicated to Hindu Gods and Goddesses. The Jain Temples of the Eastern Group of Temples include

Parsavanath Temple : It is dedicated to Parsavanath, the Jain Tirthankara. It is the largest Jain Temple present there. It is a well decorated temple.

Adinath Temple: It is dedicated to Adinath, a Jain Tirthankara. The sculpted figures of Yakshis are particularly famous here.

Ghantai Temple :  It is well known for the sculpture of a Jain goddess on a winged Garuda and for the sixteen dreams of Mahavira’s mother.

Hindu Temple: 

The Brahma Temple -: The granite stone temple has a four-faced idol of Brahma which is very popular in this temple.

The Vamana Temple – The sculptures and carvings of celestial beauties are famous.

Hanuman Temple –This temple has a statue of Hanuman which is about 8 feet tall.
